01 — Getting listedHow an organisation appears here

  1. Any organisation operating in or serving the South African private-lending market may apply for a free listing. Listing is subject to the Association's published identity, eligibility and information requirements and is not automatic.
  2. A free listing means that no listing fee is charged. It does not mean open admission, and it does not commit the Association to unlimited investigative work on an applicant's behalf.
  3. No payment, partnership or membership is required for a listing, and none can be offered in exchange for one.
  4. The Association carries out a baseline identity and eligibility check before publishing an entry, and may accept, defer, refuse, suspend or archive a listing under the published rules.
  5. Every entry records where the information came from and when it was last checked.
  6. An organisation may ask for its entry to be corrected at any time, and corrections are made promptly.
  7. An entry is archived rather than deleted when an organisation ceases to operate or leaves this market, so that an older link still resolves to an accurate record.

An applicant must give the Association enough to establish the following. This is the baseline check, and it is the reason a listing is not automatic:

  • Legal identity, and the registration number where the entity has one
  • Trading names used in the market
  • A responsible contact person
  • Genuine business contact information
  • A website or other verifiable public presence
  • The role it performs in the private-lending market
  • The models or channels it operates in
  • Any applicable statutory registration, or an explanation of why none applies
  • A complaints contact
  • An undertaking to keep the information current
  • Agreement to the Association's register and complaints rules

On an application, or on a later review, the Association may:

Accept
The baseline check is satisfied and the entry is published.
Defer
Information is missing or cannot yet be confirmed. The applicant is told what is outstanding.
Refuse
Identity or eligibility cannot be established, or the organisation will not accept the register rules. Reasons are given in writing.
Suspend
A material question arises about the accuracy of an entry, or about the organisation's conduct, pending review.
Archive
The organisation has ceased to operate or no longer serves this market. The entry is marked archived rather than deleted, so an older link still resolves to an accurate record.

02 — Reading an entryWhat an entry does and does not say

An entry records that an organisation exists, what it does, and where that information came from — nothing more. Four separate statuses may also appear against it, and each means something different. Most entries carry none of them.

What a listing is not

A listed organisation may not describe itself as approved, verified or registered by the Association. It is none of those things. It has told us who it is, we have checked that much, and we have published it.

Founding record
A factual record from the Association’s founding documents that this organisation founded it. Says nothing about the quality of its work.
Organisation membership
The organisation has joined the Association and accepted the organisational provisions of the code of conduct. Participation, not assessment. See the Member Directory.
Partnership tier
The organisation supports the Association financially, technically or educationally. See the partner directory.
Verified Organisation
An assessment of this entity against the published criteria for a stated role and scope, completed and independently confirmed, with an expiry date and annual surveillance. This is the only one of the four that rests on evidence about the organisation’s work, and it is never produced by a listing, by membership, by partnership, or because somebody who works there is a Verified Practitioner. Most entries will carry none of the four. That is the normal state of a register that lists a market rather than a membership.
